(PRWEB) May 20, 2013

While browsing through the App Store or Google Play, one can find plenty of photo editing apps. Though they allow editing photos with multiple tools, filters and effects, not many of them are able to retouch portraits. Welcome an app that helps one easily improve facial photos – Visage Lab.

The app is available for both iOS and Android platforms. It removes pimples and wrinkles, outlines the eyes and whitens the teeth in seconds with all operations made automatically. After installing Visage Lab on a mobile device, the user will get a portable beauty laboratory for enhancing portrait photos any place, any time.

Visage Lab has several advantages over the alternatives, such as fully automatic face detection and enhancement and high quality retouch. While other photo editors usually perform only partial face retouching, Visage Lab offers a full-package approach to image enhancement. Another distinctive advantage is that makeup made with Visage Lab gives the portrait a natural look, so that one can never tell a photo has been edited.

Alongside with face retouching, the app provides 40+ classy effects. These photo effects are divided into four categories: ‘Stylized’, ‘Background’, ‘Lighting’ and ‘Color’. Each category includes about 10 effects that can add more style and character to the photo. A more detailed look at the categories is given below.

‘Stylized’ effects can give the photos a touch of old times or add more flair to them. For example, the portrait can be converted into a black-and-white one, turned into a last-century postcard or processed with the famous Dave Hill effect.

‘Background’ effects can brighten up the photo and make it look really romantic. A magic change of the background scenery of the photo from summer to winter happens in one click!

‘Lighting’ effects make it possible to add fantastic lighting effects to the photo. User can make the night version of his/her favorite portrait in spite of the fact that it was taken in daylight. Or illuminate the photo with bright floodlights.

Changing color temperature and color balance of the image means a lot. Different color schemes can make your image look retro-ish or bizarre, romantic or dramatic-looking. The ’Color‘ category also contains a few effects for the devotees of sepia.

It is only natural that users of the retouching app would want to compare the original photo with the enhanced one. For this aim the original photo kept stuck to the bottom left corner. Once touched, it will appear instead of the edited photo. Users can switch between the ‘before’ and ’after‘ versions to feel the difference.

Enhanced photos can be saved to Camera roll/Gallery, instantly shared on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest or sent via e-mail right from Visage Lab.

Along with the free version of this app, there are paid versions: Visage Lab PRO HD for iPhone/iPad and Visage Lab PRO for Android. The PRO versions are ad-free, contain more effects and filters and don’t watermark photos. Besides, in PRO applications results are saved in high resolution.

It’s a big day for Yahoo. A few hours after announcing its $1.1 billion acquisition of Tumblr, Yahoo announced some major updates to its Flickr photo-sharing service.

“Tonight is about Flickr,” Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer said at an event in New York City Monday evening. “It is about that other ‘R’ brand and how we can make Flickr awesome again.”

To that end, Yahoo announced three main changes to Flickr: a cleaner design, a new Android app and much more storage space than any competing photo service offers.

The new design scraps all the white space and blue links for large photos. Every user profile has a full-lead image or a cover photo, and below that a user’s large photos are displayed in a grid. When users visit other profiles, they will see the same layout. There’s also a photo stream page, which will bring in photos from people you follow.

Those big photos are a crucial part to the new parts of the service, Mayer and SVP of Mobile Products Adam Cahan said this evening. Those photos are uploaded in full resolution. “We never want you to compromise a single pixel at Flickr,” Cahan said from the stage.

While Facebook and other photo services compress photos when uploading, Flickr will upload the full resolution image — every pixel at the full size, no degradation. Google announced last week that its photo service, which is integrated into Google Plus, will also allow users to view and upload full-resolution images taken on phones or with digital cameras.

Yahoo, however, is planning to stand out from Google in one key way when it comes to photos. Yahoo will offer everyone a full free terabyte of storage space. Google offers 15GB of free space; it charges $49.99 a month for a terabyte of space.

“No other tech company has ever offered a terabyte of storage,” Cahan said. A terabyte, which Yahoo says is basically like offering unlimited storage, can house more than a half a million photos (537,731 photos to be exact).

SUNNYVALE, Calif. & NEW YORK — May 20, 2013 – Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) and Tumblr announced today that they have reached a definitive agreement for Yahoo! to acquire Tumblr.

The product, service and brand will continue to be defined and developed separately with the same Tumblr irreverence, wit, and commitment to empower creators.

With more than 300 million monthly unique visitors and 120,000 signups every day, Tumblr is one of the fastest-growing media networks in the world. Tumblr sees 900 posts per second (!) and 24 billion minutes spent on site each month. On mobile, more than half of Tumblr’s users are using the mobile app and do an average of 7 sessions per day. Its tremendous popularity and engagement among creators, curators and audiences of all ages brings a significant new community of users to the Yahoo! network. The combination of Tumblr+Yahoo! is expected to grow Yahoo!’s audience by 50 percent to more than a billion monthly visitors, and to grow traffic by approximately 20 percent.

The deal offers unique opportunities for both companies. Tumblr can deploy Yahoo!’s personalization technology and search infrastructure to help its users discover creators, bloggers, and content they’ll love. In turn, Tumblr brings 50 billion blog posts (and 75 million more arriving each day) to Yahoo!’s media network and search experiences. The two companies will also work together to create advertising opportunities that are seamless and enhance the user experience.

Total consideration is approximately $1.1 billion, substantially all of which is payable in cash.

“Tumblr is redefining creative expression online,” said Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer. “On many levels, Tumblr and Yahoo! couldn’t be more different, but, at the same time, they couldn’t be more complementary. Yahoo is the Internet’s original media network. Tumblr is the Internet’s fastest-growing media frenzy. Both companies are homes for brands – established and emerging. And, fundamentally, Tumblr and Yahoo! are both all about users, design, and finding surprise and inspiration amidst the everyday.”

“I’ve long held the view that in all things art and design, you can feel the spirit and demeanor of the creator. That’s why it was no surprise to me that David Karp is one of the nicest, most empathetic people I’ve ever met. He’s also one of the most perceptive, capable entrepreneurs I’ve ever worked with,” continued Mayer. “David’s respect for Tumblr’s community of creators is awesome. I’m absolutely delighted to have him join our team.”

David Karp, CEO of Tumblr, addressed the Tumblr community, “Our team isn’t changing. Our roadmap isn’t changing. And our mission — to empower creators to make their best work and get it in front of the audience they deserve — certainly isn’t changing. But we’re elated to have the support of Yahoo! and their team who share our dream to make the Internet the ultimate creative canvas. Tumblr gets better faster with more resources to draw from.”

The transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions, is expected to close in the second half of the year.

Conference Call

Yahoo! will host a conference call at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time today to discuss this announcement. A live webcast of the conference call can be accessed through the company’s Investor Relations website at http://yhoo.client.shareholder.com/events.cfm?CalendarID=8.
New York, NY (PRWEB) May 16, 2013

PDN is proud to announce the award winners for this year’s Photo Annual competition, which recognizes the best photography from 2012. Now in its 13th year, the PDN Photography Annual issue features an extensive portfolio of photography in ten different categories, ranging from editorial assignments, photojournalism, portraiture and advertising to photo books, student work and fine art. Additionally, six awards are presented to photographers who are selected to be in the Photo Annual, including the Arnold Newman Prize for New Directions in Photographic Portraiture and the Marty Forscher Fellowship, which recognize photographers following in the footsteps of two photo industry legends.
“Each year we are blown away with the quality of work being produced by photographers, and we continue to be inspired — and deeply encouraged — by the level of creativity we see in the entries,” explains Lauren Wendle, vice president & publisher of the Nielsen Photo Group. “The PDN Photo Annual has become a celebration of today’s image makers that has been embraced and supported by the entire industry.”

Henrico, Virginia (PRWEB) May 17, 2013 White Knight Press, located near Richmond, has been publishing guides to higher-end small cameras since 2009, producing full-color instructional books about models such as the Leica D-Lux series, the Panasonic Lumix LX models, and the Sony DSC-RX100, as well as models from Fujifilm, Canon, and Nikon.
In an increasingly digital age in which many users of technology get most of their information from their smartphones, tablets, or computers, a small publishing company in Virginia has found that there still is a strong demand for traditional paperback guide books for advanced compact cameras.

Henrico, Virginia (PRWEB) May 17, 2013

White Knight Press, located near Richmond, has been publishing guides to higher-end small cameras since 2009, producing full-color instructional books about models such as the Leica D-Lux series, the Panasonic Lumix LX models, and the Sony DSC-RX100, as well as models from Fujifilm, Canon, and Nikon.

Although all of the publisher’s books are available in digital versions such as PDF, ePub, and Kindle, the small company has found a surprising demand by camera users for books they can hold in their hands as they work through the many features of today’s complex cameras.

In recognition of the continuing demand for printed camera guides, White Knight Press has released the paperback edition of its newest book, Photographer’s Guide to the Nikon Coolpix P520: Getting the Most from Nikon’s Superzoom Digital Camera. This 402-page book by Alexander White, like earlier titles in the author’s series of guide books, is designed to cut through the complications of this sophisticated camera and give users a head start in mastering its functions. The book explains the workings of the Coolpix P520’s numerous controls, menus, and shooting modes in language that is plain and precise, giving photographers the information they need to start capturing excellent still images and videos with a minimum of delay.

The new book provides guidance to beginning and intermediate photographers not only about how to accomplish things with the Coolpix P520, but when and why to use certain features. The book does not assume any specialized knowledge by the reader as it explains topics such as autofocus, manual focus, depth of field, flash settings, aperture priority, shutter priority, HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography, and macro photography. The book also includes a detailed discussion of techniques for getting excellent results with the camera’s phenomenal superzoom lens, which has a maximum optical focal length of 1000mm.

The book’s more than 300 full-color photographs illustrate the camera’s controls and menus, and include examples of the images that can be created using the many special settings of the camera, including the Picture Control settings, which let the photographer alter the color processing of images; the Scene and Special Effects shooting modes, with options that are optimized for various subjects, including landscapes, portraits, and action shots; and the camera’s strong array of features for continuous shooting and interval shooting.

The Coolpix P520 guide book also goes beyond the realm of everyday photography, providing introductions to more advanced topics such as infrared photography, street photography, and macro photography.

The book includes a full discussion of the video recording abilities of the Coolpix P520, which can shoot high-definition (HD) video with stereo sound, and which is able to record short clips of high-speed video at rates up to 4 times normal speed.

In three appendices, the book provides details about accessories that can be used with the P520, including cases, filter adapters, flash, and Nikon’s Wireless Mobile Adapter; sets forth a list of useful web sites and other resources for further information; and includes a special section of “quick tips” with insights into how to take advantage of the camera’s features in the most efficient ways possible.

The book includes a detailed Table of Contents and a 17-page Index so the reader can quickly find needed information about any particular feature or aspect of the camera.

The book is available for $9.95 in PDF, Kindle, and ePub formats for download through http://www.whiteknightpress.com. The paperback version is available for $24.95 through the same site or from Amazon.com.

About the TIPA General Assembly and Technical Committee
The General Assembly is the highest representative body of the association. The GA meets at least once a year and all active members must attend in order to vote for the best photo and imaging products of the year. The GA has the final word on the TIPA Awards results. The GA also elects the Board of Directors and discusses and votes on all of the association’s issues, such as the approval of the annual report and budget. It approves or rejects proposals coming from the board and from single members. In addition, the GA has the power to decide on TIPA membership issues and make all other decisions on extraordinary matters. The GA voting process follows the majority system.

Giving an award to a product is a matter of experience, technical honesty, independence, and responsibility. The General Assembly, the highest body of the association, has appointed a team of technical editors to extensively assist the GA in the award giving process. The mission of the Technical Committee, a four-member body with specific technical knowledge, is to select award candidates following an elaborate guideline. The TC works year-round checking which products have the prerequisites necessary to be considered for an award nomination.

Skip Cohen University (SCU) is a new educational resource center for aspiring and working professional photographers. There are close to sixty of the industry’s finest photographers and educators involved, all focused on helping to raise the bar in education. Sarasota, Florida (PRWEB) May 16, 2013 The newest faculty members are legendary in contemporary professional photography: John Sexton, Joe McNally and John Paul Caponigro. All three joined the efforts of photo-industry executive, Skip Cohen this week to help working professional photographers. Messrs. A notable group already, which includes the first female combat photographer of the year, Stacy Pearsall, and two Pulitzer Prize winners, Vincent Laforet and Brian Smith.
Sarasota, Florida (PRWEB) May 16, 2013

The newest faculty members are legendary in contemporary professional photography: John Sexton, Joe McNally and John Paul Caponigro. All three joined the efforts of photo-industry executive, Skip Cohen this week to help working professional photographers.

Messrs. Sexton, McNally and Caponigro join one of the most remarkable groups ever gathered to help teach photography. A notable group already, which includes the first female combat photographer of the year, Stacy Pearsall, and two Pulitzer Prize winners, Vincent Laforet and Brian Smith. There are more than 50 other remarkable photo-educators also on the SCU team.

“The faculty pages at SCU read like a Who’s Who of Photography,” said SCU founder Skip Cohen. “Those pages have been the most fun to build, because each photographer has had some remarkable knowledge to share. They were each asked, “What advice would you give a photographer just starting out?” Over and over again, I’ve been amazed at their answers, each being a little different. And we’ve still got more faculty pages to build!”

Here’s an example of the advice given by famed National Geographic photographer, Joe McNally:

…”you have to carve out time for your own photographic endeavors, and find that which you feel to be so beautiful that you can’t help but shoot it. These types of assignments, be they from a magazine, another type of client, or a self assignment, will keep you alive photographically, and remind you, always, of why you wanted to do this in the first place.”

There are videos, podcasts and posts from close to sixty photographers involved in the site with forty having their own faculty page. Each photographer brings a unique perspective to the world of imaging and information.

About SCU

“There’s a fundamental misconception in photographic education right now. New photographers actually believe they can learn to be a photographer just watching videos and webinars. They can no more learn to be a professional photographer sitting in front of their computers than they could learn to drive a car just watching videos.”

So SCU decided to do something radical. They’re going back to basics. They’re adding to the online education effort with human handshakes, telephone calls, meetings that happen face-to-face in a room full of people who share a passion for photography.

SCU is sponsored by: Drobo, ILFORD, Panasonic’s LUMIX G Team, Manfrotto, Profoto, Resource Magazine, SmugMug, Tamron USA and Italy’s Venice Album.
